Some COOL Weather Facts!

Posted Updated

A vigorous upper-level area of low pressure brought some interesting weather to North Carolina on Sunday.

It's not unheard of to be as cold as we were here in the Triangle yesterday. Sunday at the Raleigh-Durham International Airport we tied the record low maximum temperature for the day of 53 degrees. The last time it was 53 degrees for a high on April 24th was 1995.

Our mountains saw snowfall which also is not unheard of for this time of April. Totals ranged from 2-4" with higher accumulations in the highest elevations(unfortunately as I write this, I could not find any totals for Grandfather Mountain). The latest snowfall for Grandfather Mountain was on May 27,1961.

The heaviest snowfall for the month of May in North Carolina goes to Mt. Pisgah. 57" of snow fell there on May 7th in 1992. Mt. Mitchell saw 22" on that day.
