Question: Why does the right side of a hurricane give off more damage than the left side?

Answer: We should clarify that the "right" side you are referring to is relative to the direction in which the storm is moving. One reason for more damage and higher winds on that side is that to at least some degree, the movement of the storm is added to the intrinsic rotational wind speed on that side, while it is subtracted from the wind speed on the "left" side. For instance, a storm with 100 mph rotational winds moving forward at 25 mph would have resulting winds of 125 mph on the right side and 75 mph on the left. In addition, a storm approaching a coastline in the northern hemisphere has counterclockwise flowing winds that will push water toward the shore on the right side, but sweep water away from the shore on the left. This can lead to significant and destructive storm surge rises in water level near and to the right of the center where it makes landfall, with much lower rises and sometimes decreases in water levels to the left of the center.
