Question: Has a tropical cyclone ever struck California or any other western state?

Answer: Most eastern Pacific hurricanes bypass the west coast of the United States because steering currents typically take them on a west or northwesterly path. Also, cool ocean waters along the west coast rapidly weaken those few that do manage to move toward California. While remnants of these systems occasionally bring heavy rains inland, only one, a system with 50-mph winds that struck near Long Beach in 1939, has made it ashore as a tropical storm.
