During Saturday's severe weather threat, we had technical issues that made WRAL.com unavailable to the public for about 30 minutes. (Our apps, including the severe weather alert app, and email alerts continued to work properly.)
A new server dedicated to delivering specialized content onto our pages became overwhelmed by the traffic spike. When the server became unresponsive, every page request hung waiting for the content to be delivered.
This was our first test after this week's redesign, and unfortunately we let down WRAL visitors and viewers. We apologize for the down time – a rare occurrence for us – and pledge to put safeguards in place to keep this type of failure from ever happening again.
