DURHAM, N.C. — Severe weather contributed to a large number of accidents that clogged Interstate 40 during rush hour on Friday night.

The Highway Patrol reported more than 20 wrecks on a 13-mile stretch of I-40 between N.C. Highway 55 in Durham and N.C. Highway 54 in Cary.

The worst was a 17-car pile-up on westbound I-40 at Miami Boulevard in Durham County shortly after 4 p.m.

The three leftmost lanes were closed during clean-up, causing extensive delays, traffic cameras showed. Westbound I-40 was backed up to around N.C. 54 and eastbound I-40 to around Fayetteville Road.

The lanes were reopened by a little after 7:15 p.m. after the accident scene was cleared.

No one was seriously hurt in any of the accidents on Friday, troopers said.
