Wayne deputy arrested

Posted October 11, 2013

Wayne County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Randy Avon Thompson was arrested Friday by agents for the State Bureau of Investigation on charges he stole, altered and destroyed evidence.

Thompson surrendered at the Wayne County Magistrate’s Office and was given a $5,000 unsecured bond. He resigned his position after 10 years with the sheriff's office.

Authorities began investigating Thompson after a tip from a citizen more than a year ago.

He faces four charges of obstructing justice and four charges of altering, stealing and destroying criminal evidence.

And FYI - becasue the comment is so common - as wildpig posted below

"it's a rat's nest down here in XYZ county"

You hear that in EVERY county. People are so busy focusing or the 3-4 bad apples, they don't see the 200+ that are good, just and admirable.

Kind of like not seening the forest for the trees I suppose

Let us remember, while this really is a bad thing, LEO are human too. Yes, if they commit crimes they should be held to a higher standard, just as say a criminal is that kills one, compared to a regular citizen. However, they so much as get a speeding ticket and it ends up in the news. Let us not forget, LEO are not some divine creatures sent from heaven, or whatever you may believe. They are HUMAN. And while this was NOT ok, sometimes, we all make choices that are mistakes trying to do what we *BELIEVE* to be the right thing but in reality the means do not justify the ends. And if he did whatever he did simply because he could, and not because he thought he was doing the right thing, still, human. HOld accountable but don't judge them all or think this is a free pass for citizens to say, "Well now I can break the law, they did" That is something I would expect to hear from the kids I taught in elementary school

"He was a fine young man." - beachboater

... except for the stealing, altering, and destroying of evidence. And probably a host of other things we don't know about.

I just heard that he actually resigned from the sheriff's department in June of 2012 because of the investigation.

It really is a shame. He was a fine young man.

If the LEOs and officers of the court don't obey the law, no one has to.

Hopefully this is one of many arrests to come. There is a lot more then just one deputy that has broken the ethics of the criminal justice profession. hopefully the State Bureau of investigations continue to look into all cases that the Wayne County Sheriff's Department has on their books. Hopefully detectives will be investigated as well as the sheriff. If any criminal justice professional has acted illegally within the profession and are found to be guilty of such then they should be punished just like anyone else. They should not be treated like they are above the law.
