The farmers pose with their entries in the Biggest Watermelon weigh-off: (right to left) Larry Boyette, 170.5 pounds, third place; Donald Murphy, 184 pounds, first place; Robert Ward, 153 pounds, fifth place; H.C. Williams, 168.5 pounds, fourth place; Charles Payne, 136.5 pounds, sixth place; and Jimmy Briggs, 180 pounds, second place.

The State Farmers Market in Raleigh will have some giant watermelons on display this week.

Watermelon Day is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, at the market off Lake Wheeler Road in south Raleigh. The event includes the watermelon contest with a $1,000 prize for the first place winner; free watermelon slices; recipes; a visit from the N.C. watermelon queen; and lots of North Carolina grown watermelon for sale.

This is a fun opportunity to head over to the market and pick up some watermelon and all of the other great produce for sale.

It's not bad if you live or work in Raleigh and can head over there for your lunch break.
