KIRKWOOD, MO — Crews responded to a water main break near Kirkwood Wednesday afternoon that sent water gushing down a neighborhood street.

The break occurred near the intersection of South Sappington and East Argonne in Oakland near Glendale. Missouri American Water officials said a 20-inch water main broke and that roughly 20 residents and a few businesses were affected.

Missouri American Water originally expected the break to be fixed by Thursday morning's rush hour, but later said they hoped to have it fixed by 12 p.m.

Water service was restored to residents by Thursday afternoon, but about five homeowners are left with a mess to clean up.

One homeowner said their convertible Mercedes was totaled after their basement garage flooded.

Another homeowner said all his appliances in his basement were ruined after five feet of water filled it. He also told News 4 his car floated at one point in his garage.

The view from Skyzoom 4 on Wednesday showed water flowing down the street.

Missouri American Water said the street will likely remain closed for a couple days to repair the roadway.

Missouri American Water said it doesn't know exactly what caused the main to break, but heat, high pressure and high demand likely contributed.
