Water main break closes Raleigh school

Posted October 21, 2011

— Powell Elementary School closed early Friday because a nearby water main break left the school without water, officials said.

A 6-inch main ruptured on Marlborough Road between Westchester and Remington roads, officials said.

Repairing the line meant cutting water service to Powell Elementary and a dozen other nearby customers, officials said.

The school dismissed at 11:45 a.m., and teachers called parents individually to get them to pick up their children early, officials said.

a-moment-of-truth: Water mains can break anywhere. Health regulations require they close the school (no flushing toilets, no hand washing). What would you do if your daughter had to be dismissed early due to a water main break from the school she is at right now? It doesn't matter if you are in a magnet or not, you are responsible as a working parent to have a back-up plan, no matter where you work. Parents who don't have one already should start planning. It is your responsibility. I know it's not always easy. I worked full time for the 16 years my kids were in school. Consider this a wake-up call. Always have a plan!

I am sitting here on lunch break. In Durham. Powell was one of our magnet options. And we live in Knightdale and again I work waaaay over in Durham. So ahhh....what if I couldn't go get my daughter from school early today?

(Leaves to get ready for my MANDATORY 2:30 p.m. meeting)
