Raleigh, N.C. — A Wake County man accused of killing his wife last year confessed to the crime moments before police in Galax, Va., found her body in the back of his pickup truck, according to a search warrant returned Thursday.
Sonny Howard, 42, of 14925 Creedmoor Road, is charged with first-degree murder in the May 23, 2012, death of his wife, Sherry Howard, 50.
Wake County sheriff's investigators used Sonny Howard's cellphone signal to track him to Virginia after neighbors called 911 to report that they saw him loading what appeared to be a body into his truck.
When Galax police pulled him over, he got out of the truck immediately and told them he had just killed his wife, the warrant states.
Investigators issued a search warrant earlier this week for Sonny and Sherry Howard's cellphones. Sonny Howard told police after his arrest that he spoke on the phone with family members on the night of the murder and while he was traveling to Virginia.
