RALEIGH, N.C. — Local authorities are scouring Instagram accounts in a criminal investigation after nude photos of Wake County high school students started appearing on them, according to a search warrant released Tuesday.

A woman told Wake Forest police last week that her daughter had learned that someone had posted nude photos of her on Twitter and Instagram. The girl is now 18, but the photos were from when she was 14 or 15, the mother told investigators.

Nude photos of other young women were also on the Instagram account, the mother said.

Wake County Public School System security personnel located other Instagram accounts with photos of nude girls and boys, and they identified some as students at Enloe High School, Athens Drive High School, Rolesville High School, Holly Spring High School, Heritage High School and Middle Creek High School, according to an affidavit to obtain the search warrant.

The school district is working with law enforcement to investigate the case, spokeswoman Renee McCoy said.

Investigators want Facebook, which owns Instagram, to turn over all information about four Instagram accounts, including user names, logins between Feb. 10 and Feb. 17, text messages, emails, chat transcripts and details on any other accounts operated by the users, according to the affidavit.

Bill Crabtree, a spokesman for the Wake Forest Police Department, said investigators don't yet know how many teens might be victims in the case.

Crabtree urged parents to talk to their children about the dangers of posing for or posting sexually explicit photos.
