— A Leesville Road High School senior confessed to putting hand soap in a teacher's soda a week ago, sending her to the hospital, Raleigh police stated in a search warrant released Thursday.

Cody Austin Beckett, 18, of 5205 Indigo Moon Way, told police that when business teacher Roseann Marie Monteleone went to the school office, he slipped hand soap into a can of Coca-Cola she had opened, according to the warrant.

After drinking the soda, Monteleone "became violently ill" and collapsed in the bathroom, the warrant states. She had lesions in her throat and had to be taken to Rex Hospital.

Police seized a Blackberry phone that Beckett had around that time. They want to try to recover deleted text messages and emails sent from the phone.

Beckett was charged with assault on a school employee. He was released into the custody of his parents.

Monteleone, 46, has been teaching at the school since September.

Ok...dont you think she would know the Coke is a little off after the first sip??? How brainless is she? Then to drink the whole thing? Since when did soap send you to the hospital? I guess they will call it a hate crime since he is white. Its just a little soap....though it was wrong to do...come on!!! How in the heck can it make you go to the hospital???

how many more reasons can be given why this kid shouldn't take responsibility for his actions?-didisaythat

Maybe his photo or last name. That seems enough for most of the people on Golo.

  • whistler411 Apr 14, 2011

He's 18 years old. He should not have been released into the custody of his parents.

we_all_have_it_coming- I will agree with that, sex crimes usually go both ways though I think.

....If he does end up in jail, may he reign as "The Corn-Hole King" at the Graybar Hotel. ;)

The comments on here are unbelievable. And people wonder why this country is in the mess it is in. how many more reasons can be given why this kid shouldn't take responsibility for his actions?

Yes, kdensmore. He should be arrested and jailed until he makes bail; then tried and prosecuted, though I suppose if he admitted it, we could skip the trial part. He could have killed someone. That is a serious crime. He knew the consequence of his actions and now needs to learn the part about growing up that involves taking full responsibility for his actions.

@ JAT : Several postings appeared between when your first statement came out and when my last one did, but I don't see a single reason why people can't have something to drink with them while they lecture. It's not a social event, but if a person is standing before a class for 45 minutes to an hour and a half, they likely get thirsty from talking! The temperature of classrooms are not always consistent or comfortable either.

But to suggest that the teacher shouldn't be allowed to have something to drink at her desk in her classroom is ridiculous.

To the folks saying "it was just a prank and he's been punished enough," I wouldn't want to work with you. He should be punished, but I don't believe jailed.
