RALEIGH, N.C. — Mostly sunny skies and a southwesterly breeze will help temperatures climb to near 60 degrees across central North Carolina on the first day of the work week, about 10 degrees warmer than normal for mid-January.

Temperatures were in the upper 30s across the Triangle at 7 a.m., and they will climb gradually through the morning, WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

"We're going to be relatively quiet today, which is nice considering the rocky weather we saw Saturday afternoon," she said.

An approaching cold front will produce light rain showers across the area early Tuesday, but precipitation won't be heavy and the threat for rain will go down quickly after lunchtime.

"We're not going to see a lot of rain in terms of totals with this system, but it could create some wet roadways for our Tuesday morning commute," Gardner said. "It's going to be the type of rain that is a nuisance more than anything."

Highs Tuesday will top out in the mid-50s after starting in the mid-40s thanks to overnight cloud cover.

A chance for light rain showers will stay put on Wednesday, and some of the area could see a stray snowflake during the afternoon and evening as colder air begins to filter in behind the front.

"We'll call these vanity snowflakes, if we even see them at all," Gardner said. "This system doesn't have a ton of moisture with it, and we're going to be too warm for anything to create problems on the roads."

Highs Wednesday will be in the mid-to upper 40s.

Once the front clears, temperatures will fall sharply into the upper 20s on Thursday morning. Despite the cooing trend, abundant sunshine will return to the Triangle late in the work week and throughout the weekend.

Highs will range from the mid-40s to 50 degrees and lows will be near 30 degrees.
