Sunny, warm weather sticks around Sunday

Abundant sunshine will dominate across central North Carolina Sunday afternoon, pushing temperatures back toward the 80-degree mark, but a change is on the way for the work week.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Abundant sunshine will dominate across central North Carolina Sunday afternoon, pushing temperatures back toward the 80-degree mark, but a change is on the way for the work week.

A cool, breezy early morning created near-perfect conditions for getting outdoors early Sunday. At the start of the Rock 'n' Roll Raleigh Marathon and 1/2 Marathon runners saw a few clouds and temperatures in the mid-50s.

Winds could increase slightly during the late morning and early afternoon on Sunday, but breezes should remain between 10 and 15 mph.

"We are about to see a weather transition take place as we start the new work week with a chance for some rain Monday and then a soaking rain Tuesday and perhaps into early Wednesday," WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss said.

By Tuesday, the precipitation increases in intensity and coverage, and there is the chance for thunderstorms. The Triangle could see an accumulation of 1 to 2 inches of rain through Tuesday evening.

"Along with the rain, this system brings a return to chilly temperatures," Moss said, pointing out that 80s are about 10 degrees warmer than the norm for mid-April.

Overnight lows will dip into the 30s for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and the daytime conditions will gradually clear but remain cool.
