— Durham police on Friday arrested a man wanted for snatching the purse of a sleeping woman at the Roxboro Walmart Monday.

Roxboro Police Chief Todd Boycher said his officers had identified Kenneth Lamont Vaughn, 42, of 1913 Morehead Avenue in Durham, as the man who appeared in surveillance video leaning over a sleeping Queen Walters, 76, looking around and then taking her purse.

Walters had been using a scooter to shop at the store, at 1049 Durham Road, when she became groggy from medication she was taking, Boycher said.

The thief made off with her keys, credit card, license, a significant amount of cash and medication.

"Instead of doing the right thing and checking on her condition or letting someone know, he reaches in her cart, gets her purse and walks off with it," Boycher said.

On Friday, Durham police stopped a car that matched the suspect's, and Vaughn jumped out and ran. Durham officers arrested him after a brief chase, Boycher said, giving praise for their efforts. Roy Walters Family of purse-snatching victim thankful for community support

Roy Walters, Queen's son, said he was shocked when he saw the surveillance video of his mother but thankful that police caught Vaughan.

"The people of Roxboro and North Carolina came through," he said. "It usually doesn't happen that easily, but this time it came through. The main thing is she was safe and no harm came to her."

Vaughn faces a charge of felony larceny from a person and was being held in the Person County jail on $1 million secured bond.

This guy has to have priors - can't be the first time he's gotten in trouble with the law - how low do you have to be, how low do you have to sink, to do something like this? It's sickening, and I'm glad he was caught.

You have heard of loss prevention right? You do realize someone monitors the cameras live, correct? Or is supposed to.......

What has that got to do with the guy being a thief?

Assuming you didn't read my whole post, I will re-iterate.

I realize it's hard to keep up with the many cameras in store, however knowing how this walmart is run and the employees act - it doesnt surprise me that it went unnoticed that a woman was blacked out in an isle, while a man looted her cart, stealing her purse. Then proceeded to have enough time to check out and leave carrying a purse.

I'm not blaming walmart of his disgusting actions, but knowing what I know - it doesnt surprise me it went unnoticed.

Having been to the roxboro walmart many times, I can say it is was one of the worst run walmarts in the area. The employees are extremely rude and make rules/policies up as they go along, the managers are rude/unhelpful, and things are constantly out of stock. I was treated so poorly by one of their 'management' members I emailed the corporate division and received no response.

A few weeks ago, someone stole 2 of their display laptops (I was told this by an employee). So instead of opting to try and find the perp or increase security -- this walmart opted to take 'pictures' of all their laptops, and put a single picture of each laptop in a picture frame. How are you supposed to buy a laptop without seeing/trying it out? Here's a picture of their display: http://i.imgur.com/7inYN.jpg

Sorry to go off on a rant - just doesnt surprise me this guy was able to leave the store with a purse unnoticed.

I'm so happy he got caught, so glad he's under a significant bond, and I hope he gets more than a slap on the wrist when he's brought to trial.

It may be petty crime but it did make national news. I hope the woman changes her locks. He could have made a second set of keys and steal from her a second time. I wouldn't put it past this guy. How stupid can this guy be? Everyone knows Walmart is loaded to the gills with security cams. I hope part of his punishment is to 1) Give back what was stolen, 2) Become a Walmart greeter for a day with a sign hanging from his neck stating that he is a thief and hand out $1 to each customer. :)
