Nstutt- my husband went to the same Walgreens today and was told the same thing. She said she would "get in trouble" if she accepted it. My husband stated the coupon policy and that she should just adjust the amount. The cashier stated that she "didn't have time for this" and finally accepted the coupon as the checkout line got longer....

nstutt - She was wrong. Policy has always allowed them to adjust the coupon amount down to the price of the product. Here is the exact wording on the policy:

"The coupon amount must be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied. (For example, a $5.00 coupon for a $4.99 item will result in a $4.99 coupon value)."

    http://www.walgreens.com/topic/generalhelp/coupon_policy_main.jsp

It's always a good idea to have copies of the policies for the stores you shop regularly with you (or bring them up on your smartphone) for less-informed employees.

I have used the $1 Butterball coupon at Walgreens on the .99 bacon and they did reduce the amount of the coupon to make it free at that same store so probably a newer employee.

I tried to get the free bacon at the 4042 store but the cashier said I could not use a $1 coupon on a 99 cent item. Said I could use the coupon without using my card, but then it would be 99 cents ($1.99 price without card minus the $1 coupon). But that is not free!
