Wake Up and Read, which has been working in February to collect books for kids who don't have many at home, will celebrate the book drive and Dr. Seuss' birthday on Monday with special events at Barnes & Noble books stores across Wake County.

The events are scheduled for Monday evening at the Brier Creek Commons, Cary Commons, Crabtree Valley Mall and Triangle Town Center locations. WAKE Up and Read's website has details and information about the exact times for each of the events, but they run between about 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Children's groups are scheduled to perform. Books will be read. Visitors can meet local mascots, including Ruben, the WAKE Up and Read rooster.

Participants also can buy books from the WAKE Up and Read wish list. Barnes & Noble will contribute a percentage of every sale made with a book fair voucher to the organization.

The book drive ran through the month of February, though the efforts have been extended through March 16 because of the winter weather during the last couple of weeks. The group's goal has been to collect 100,000 books for kids - babies to 12-year-olds. The books will be distributed to nine elementary schools, along with child care facilities and community centers nearby, to saturate the neighborhood with books. Each child will get to take 10 books home.
