Wake to limit student photos, names on Web

— Effective July 1, the Wake County school system will no longer identify individual students on its Web sites.

The policy is designed to protect students from those who would prey on them by using information gleaned online, a spokesman said.

According to the plan, individual students will not be pictured in photos online. Groups or photos taken from a distance may be used.

Where student images are shown, only first names will be used.

TaxMan, you need to reread the article.

So, when a student is the Valedictorian at commencement they cannot be identified by name in the paper?
How about if they are arrested and accused of a crime?
Seems like a silly guideline - I guess the yearbooks will not have last names and will be taken from a far distance...

This is all good, but, what other steps are being taken to help our kids. I started complaining 2 years ago about my kids Social security number being used as student ID numbers at school in Durham... That was still in practice there when I finally said enough and moved them to another county.
