Wake Tech student offers seat in class on Craigslist

Posted August 19, 2009

— Wake Technical Community College on Wednesday asked a student to pull his ad from Craigslist in which he offered to sell a seat in a class that is fully enrolled.

The unidentified 17-year-old student wanted to sell a seat in an American government class at Wake Tech's north campus on Louisburg Road in Raleigh. He said in the ad that he had registered but determined he could afford to pay the fee, and he wanted to raise money to pay for his other classes.

The student suggested meeting potential buyers in public where they could log onto separate computers simultaneously, allowing him to drop the class and the buyer to enroll.

"Please let your offers be pretty generous," the student implored in the ad.

Wake Tech officials talked with the student and his family Wednesday, and the post was removed from Craigslist a few hours later.

sumamen you decided to change your name to Nsrchoftrth?
    I wonder why.

    Excuse me?
sumamen you do not know me personally.
You knew me when I was younger that's it.
And yes I live in a hotel but it actually saves are family money.
there's not alot of space but for all the perks it is the best for us right now.

And no I did not enroll twice.
As I stated in the ad I had to drop it once then get it back and when I knew I had to drop it again I thought of doing this.
At the time I did not know it was against school policy.

I was contacted by the school but they did not leave a message and since I had no idea at the time what was going on I did not return their call till later. I found out what was going on through my sister who got the call from WRAL and NBC17.

Her number is a S.C. number because our real dad lives there and when she got her cell she kept the number.

Like I commented in the NBC17 story:

If you want more inf just ask! Don't assume. psmims@my.waketech.edu or Imsu91@gmail.com

gymmonkeymom - yeah I wonder if that wasn't in the article at first, because a ton of people missed it if it was. He wasn't enrolled 2x, just said he couldn't afford to take the 1 he was enrolled in, and since it was a popular class, he thought he might make some $$ off of his not being able to stay in.

read the story folks! the student is NOT enrolled in the class TWICE! He was going to drop this class to help pay for the other classes he was scheduled to take!

This type of thing is fairly common. Maybe not for profit, but its definitely done...especially for folks nearing the end of their degree program. If you're in class when registration opens for your last semester, you have GOT to get into those classes or else delay graduating by at least a semester and put off getting a job by 4 months. Typically folks in this situation will get a friend who can be available to secure a spot for them, then drop/add simultaneously at a later time.

This child has had a very unstable life, I know him personally. My question at the moment is: where in the heck is his parents? They are never in the picture.
They live in a hotel, which is costly enough to begin with, there is no parental upbringing to help this child.

Based on the student's age it seems as if he may be apart of the high school dual enrollment plan, which causes regular students to be booted out of classes to make room for high school students. This is extremely unfair for people who are trying to register and can't get into classes.

I hardly doubt he is in the class 2x, he probably didn't want to take the class. They finally deleted his post on craigslist!
