Wake takes new look at transit options

— Wake County is taking another stab at devising a transit plan for the area.

A public meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the Raleigh Convention Center is the first step in identifying major travel corridors for further study and investment and providing residents with information about how decisions that will guide future transit investments will be made.

County commissioners never addressed a 2011 transit plan that included commuter rail service between Durham and Garner and light rail service from downtown Cary to the Triangle Town Center mall in northeast Raleigh. The Republican majority on the board said they wanted a more measured approach to transit.

Democrats seized control of the Board of Commissioners last month, and their platform included more focus on transit as a quality-of-life issue to relieve traffic congestion.

During Monday's meeting, transit consultants Jarrett Walker and Kimley Horn will present their plan to achieve a new vision for transit in Wake County. The process will produce two scenarios that will be presented to the public for their input.

"It's really an effort to get the public awareness about this process kicking off and how it's going to move forward over the next six to seven months," said Timothy Maloney, director of Wake County Planning, Development and Inspections.

Area residents are encouraged to participate in the planning process. They can receive updates by signing up at, follow the process on Twitter @waketransit, participate in surveys and share their concerns with elected officials and staff at public meetings and workshops. The planning process is estimated to take seven months.

The finished plan will be evaluated by Wake County officials, Triangle Transit and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, which includes representatives from every municipality in the county.

Transit supporters hope to have a bond referendum on the Wake County ballot in 2016.

This plan is being funded by Wake County, Triangle Transit, CAMPO, Raleigh, Cary, the Research Triangle Foundation, North Carolina State University and the Raleigh Durham International Airport.

    With more cars on the roads it will lead to widening many roads and also increase taxes! I rather have my taxes be invested to something cleaner, more efficient and obviously the better option. We cannot rely on automobiles forever! Think smart, think into the future.

    We don't need an expensive meeting on transportation. Our needs are basic.

    What we need is safer alternative transportation such as proper bike lanes. I'm not talking about an investment in spray paint where the city paints on a dangerous road and calls its safe for cyclists. I'm talking about real infrastructure and proper multi-use roadway design.

    And if your serious about effective transportation enforce the traffic laws and throw in some speed and red light cameras.

    Also, please require those CAT bus drivers drive safely and not to kill any more of us.

    You mentioned North Hills. Look at the buses around that area. You NEVER see more than 2-3 people and after 6 pm, they are empty. Why drive those big buses around when empty. Get something small and save money. Why not have the people riding pay for what the cost actually is to operate like a user fee. Works everywhere else, why not here. What does Raleigh spend vs collect on bus service today.

    "Um..who do you think rides the bus?

    You should go to one of the meetings where the board members discuss routes and service levels. You'll see that the decisions are largely driven by employers like Wake Med, Rex Hospital, Crabtree Mall, Brier Creek, Wal Mart and other retail hubs. The employers need employees to have an affordable way to get to work and prefer that every employee doesn't occupy a parking space. So try to refame it in your mind as something that supports rich people and then you can support it.

    I'm expecting the true cost will be hidden in the early stages until this gets so far along that we can't 'stop the train'. How many billions will ultimately be spent, paid for by the million wake county residents, to benefit the few thousand that will use it?

    This is only going to cost a half cent sales tax. Nobody is even going to feel it, so I really don't understand why people are getting up in arms about this issue. Even after the sales tax increase we're still going to have one of the lowest sales tax rates in the entire United States.
