Wake students, teachers may miss school due to changes in makeup days

The decision by school system leaders to take a portion of spring break came after the announcement that students would attend school on Good Friday and two Saturdays, one in April and one in May, to make up the lost time.

"The families I have heard from, they are adjusting their schedule," said Steve Moore, principal of Fuquay-Varina Elementary School.

The change in schedule came too late for some students and teachers to change their plans.

"There has been a change of the schedule and certainly there are going to be conflicts," Moore said. "Myself personally, I have not heard any negative feedback form parents."

But more than 7,000 people signed an online petition asking the school system to reconsider using March 23-25 as makeup days.

Moore says he communicated constantly with staff and the public about what is going on and why.

"Understanding why there was that change in direction," he said.

At the same time, Moore said he is not anticipating a full house.

"I think we will have a higher than normal absentee rate for students," he said.

Five of Moore's 33 classroom teachers said they will miss at least one of the spring break makeup days.

"If parents have plans, we want to work with them and help them to make up that work that was missed," Moore said.
