Wake SPCA: When fireworks fly, keep pets inside
Although fireworks are a highlight of Fourth of July festivities for many families, pets don't look forward to them.

"We see a big increase in lost and stray animals over the holiday because the fireworks frighten pets so much they end up panicking and running off in an effort to escape the noise," Molly Stone, a Wake County SPCA animal behavior specialist said in a statement. "One of the most important things to remember on the Fourth of July is to keep your pets indoors so they don't have an opportunity to run away, get hit by a car or end up in an animal shelter."
In addition, SPCA officials offered these tips:
- Let pets skip the fireworks display. Leave them at home.
- Keep pets in a space with a fan or television running quietly to cancel out the erratic booms of fireworks.
- Give your pet a delicious treat like a rawhide to keep them busy and distracted from the noise.
- Make sure that your pet is wearing an ID tag so that they can be returned home quickly should they get loose and become lost.
In honor of the holiday, the Wake SPCA is reducing adoption fees for all pit bulls to $17.76. The shelter's adoption center will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 4.
