Wake SPCA to start taking applications for puppy mill dogs Monday

The SPCA of Wake County will begin taking applications on Monday for more than two dozen dogs and one cat that were rescued March 21 from a suspected puppy mill in Duplin County.

Animal control officers found more than 50 dogs, including German shepherds, dachsunds and other breeds, in a home outside Faison on March 21.

Many of the dogs had untreated medical conditions and had no access to food or water. Carl Faison and Anthony McMillian are facing 22 counts each of animal cruelty in the case.

SPCA of Wake County will begin taking applications for the rescued dogs at 1 p.m. Monday, and officials at the shelter said that they still need donations to help cover the cost of care for some of the dogs.

"It is clear these dogs lived a nightmare. We are grateful to be part of this rescue effort and to ensure these dogs will never suffer that neglect again," Darci VanderSlik, spokesperson for SPCA of Wake County, said following the rescue. "Right now, what these dogs need most is our medical care and attention. The SPCA depends on donations to help us care for all our animals."
