Wake school board member Benton to run in fall election

Posted July 3, 2013

Wake County Board of Education member Tom Benton, who was appointed to the board earlier this year, announced Wednesday he will run for the seat during an election this fall.

Benton, a retired teacher and principal, has served in the District 1 seat since February, when he was appointed to fill the vacancy left by Chris Malone. Malone left after being elected to the state House of Representatives.

Benton, 62, of Zebulon, is a registered Democrat, according to election records. In a statement Wednesday, Benton said he’s shown competence during his five months in office as the board has adopted a budget, hired a new superintendent and laid out a building plan.

“I have gained valuable experience since joining the board, and I am determined to make a difference in District 1,” Benton said. “I pledge to work tirelessly with our principals, teachers, parents, and business and civic leaders to meet the high standards we will set for each of our schools.”

The school board election will be held Oct. 8.

Excuse me: It was not Social Studies, but Current Events

Mr. Benton was my Social Studies teacher for the '72-'73 school year at Enloe, (before the magnet days). He always has cared about his students; I really don't think time has changed this. Best of luck to him. I don't think there will be any regrets WHEN he is elected.

Yes! Wonderful man who cares about our kids, actually comes to PTA meetings when it isn't a photo op. we need more of him and less politicians.

"The last thing we need is another lifer from education."- I would rather have someone who has an understanding of the ins and outs of how a school is actually run and how it deals with issues rather than someone who doesn't have kids, has never worked in education and is there because of ideological issues. We trust bankers to help run banks, military "lifers" to head the military etc. Those that have devoted their lives to education didn't do so for the money. They want to make a difference in the future of the children and the nation. I know I wouldn't do their job for what they make!!

The entire school board needs to run. As far away from Wake County as they possibly can.

The last thing we need is another lifer from education. Unfortunately, people will probably elect this guy. We need people on the board that is going to push to CHANGE the system instead of doing the same old failed stuff that has been destroying the system.
