Wake County Board of Education member Tom Benton, who was appointed to the board earlier this year, announced Wednesday he will run for the seat during an election this fall.

Benton, a retired teacher and principal, has served in the District 1 seat since February, when he was appointed to fill the vacancy left by Chris Malone. Malone left after being elected to the state House of Representatives.

Benton, 62, of Zebulon, is a registered Democrat, according to election records. In a statement Wednesday, Benton said he’s shown competence during his five months in office as the board has adopted a budget, hired a new superintendent and laid out a building plan.

“I have gained valuable experience since joining the board, and I am determined to make a difference in District 1,” Benton said. “I pledge to work tirelessly with our principals, teachers, parents, and business and civic leaders to meet the high standards we will set for each of our schools.”

The school board election will be held Oct. 8.
