— A Wake County deputy was killed over the weekend in a boating accident in Virginia.

Lt. James Newsome, 55, was boating with friends on the Chesapeake Bay Saturday afternoon when his boat capsized a few miles east of Hampton, Va., authorities said. A tugboat was involved in the accident, according to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, but authorities declined to release more details.

The U.S. Coast Guard and some boaters in the area rescued three other people from the water, authorities said. Kenneth Evan, 57, Tilghman Hall, 70, and William Thompson, 73, all of Raleigh, were taken to Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Newsome, a detention officer, had worked with the Wake County Sheriff's Office since August 1991.

The Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the accident.

    A1----thank you. I couldn't agree more.

Prayers to his family and friends.

Ummmm...landshark, I didn't see anywhere in the short article that he wasn't wearing a life vest. Nor do we know that he couldn't swim. He may have been a good swimmer. Neither knowing how to swim or wearing a life vest is guaranteed to save you life when an accident happens.

I know, because my husband died in a fishing accident at the beach 7 yrs ago...he was a good swimmer, he had on a life jacket. He still drowned. So get facts before pouncing please

He was actually a good swimmer. I do not know all the details, but if he sustained a head or spinal injury, a life vest wouldn't be a guarantee of anything. So how about all you people who know so much about the situation tell me what happened? By reading some of these posts, you must know something I don't.

Bottom Line: Mr. Newsome was a good man, a good friend, and will be missed. How about just praying for his family and quit acting so high and mighty.

That does it.....I want all boats banned and destroyed immediately. Only the US Navy should be allowed to own or operate a boat. They are just plain dangerous.
