— An inmate from Wake County escaped Wednesday from an inmate crew that was building an addition to Alexander Correctional Institution in western North Carolina.

Xavier Shaw, 45, was serving a six-year sentence for kidnapping and several counts of common law robbery. His prison term was scheduled to end Aug. 30, but he has charges pending in Wake County in a January bank robbery.

Shaw was released from prison on Dec. 28 after serving a little more than two years of his sentence. A month later, he was charged with robbing a BB&T on Brier Creek Parkway.

Anyone who has seen Shaw or has information on his whereabouts is asked to call local law enforcement or Alexander Correctional Institution at 828-632-1331.

The state would have let him out soon enough in the name of saving the tax payer money and balancing the buget. I guess they too slow for him.

Well, duh - this is about a criminal doing things we expect criminals to do - no news there. We hold police to a little bit higher standard, so there is naturally more interest when they do stupid stuff.

When found they should put him where he can never get out. Someone, family or friend is hiding him. They should be highly charged for harboring a fugitive when he is caught.

My husband is one of the correction officers that are aiding the police in finding this man...this inmate is trying to make his way back to Raleigh, so believe me, they(law enforcement) are all over the place from Raleigh all the way to the prison he escaped from looking for him, so he can run, but he can't hide(not for long anyways). And some of you are right, it seems that the inmates are running the DOC. You all have no idea on the stories I hear about where officers are being fired and face criminal charges themselve for bring contraband in to the inmates.

Just another excellent reason to go back to chain gangs where each convict is chained to another convict.

Sounds like a real loser - probably spend the rest of his life in prison. Cannot believe they had him on a work crew with bank robbery charges pending! Bet he already is getting his guns and going for some money - may end up in a shoot out with the police somewhere.

Bank robbery was a mandatory 20-25 years ago since its a federal offense.
Since this was pending why would he be a work program. Dumb move on prison authority.
You really have ask who is running the correction dept
