Wake GOP taps businessman for Senate race
Wake County Republicans have chosen local businessman John M. Alexander Jr. as their nominee for state Senate District 15.
Posted — UpdatedAlexander is the president and chief executive of Cardinal International Trucks, founded by his father. The family has long been active in local philanthropy. The downtown Raleigh YMCA is named for them.
Alexander was also the director of Triangle Flight of Honor, a project that flew more than 800 World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., from 2010 to 2012 to view the monument built in their honor. WRAL was a partner in that project.
The seat Alexander will run for has been held for the past 10 years by Sen. Neal Hunt, R-Wake, who is retiring at the end of 2014. Rep. Jim Fulghum, R-Wake, won the Republican primary for the seat in May but withdrew from the race earlier this month due to a battle with cancer.
Alexander faces a well-known Democratic opponent: former Raleigh mayor and former state transportation secretary Tom Bradshaw.
This will be Alexander's second run for a seat in the state legislature. He unsuccessfully challenged Sen. Josh Stein, D-Wake, in 2008.
