Wake Forest man charged in school bus crash

Posted November 10, 2010

— A Wake Forest man was charged Wednesday after he crashed into the back of a Wake County school bus on N.C. Highway 96 near Halifax Road at about 6:30 a.m.

Of the eight people on board bus No. 568, one was taken to WakeMed for observation. Five others reported minor, non-visible injuries, according to Sgt. Jeff Gordon and Wake County public schools spokesman Michael Evans.

The bus was traveling to Zebulon Middle School, Gordon said.

Christopher Trast, 47, of 1454 Cimarron Parkway Apt. 10, was charged with failing to reduce speed.

He crashed into the back of the school bus, which was stopped and had its mechanical stop sign and flashing red lights activated as it prepared to pick up a student, Gordon said.

If a big yellow thing stopped in the road with brake lights, flashing red lights, and a white strobe light didn't grab his attention, was he on the phone, or texting while driving?

I would hate to be a bus driver or a truck driver. The drivers on the road today are terrible. They pay little attention to what they are doing. it is obvious from the facts of this case that the driver was not paying attention. 37 I have to disagree with you on this one.

Iworkforaliving (& others)....here in Florida there would have been quite a few more charges/tickets for hitting a STOPPED school bus !!!!!

failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision, that has got to be the dumbest violation. Whats a head on collision? failure to reverse speed to avoid a collision?

96 is a Lunatick's pathway early in the morning. You usually see people racing each other and cutting other people off, running them off the road and there have been numerous accidents along that area of 96 in the last few years. There seems to especially be a competition between a beige Hoda Pilot and a red pickup truck. They pass at a very high rate of speed, while racing each other, on blind curves, in no passing zones, going up hill, etc. The laws apparently don't exist for some of these people. Complaints have been registered with authorities but it just goes on and on.

Many accidents are caused by bus drivers, they simply are not found at fault. There is a difference between those two things. Last Thursday, I had a school bus make a left turn in front of me from the right lane without signaling and I knew it would do no good to call the county since I was interrogated and ignored on an earlier call. Some bus drivers have the understood rule of the biggest vehicle wins.

We all need to give school buses more space.

    Trust all are ok!!

tmp - I ride the CAT bus to campus sometimes, and I agree with you! There is not a job I would hate more than being a bus driver and have to deal with all the crazy drivers on the road!
