Wake deputy OK after head-on collision; driver charged with DWI
A 56-year-old Raleigh man has been charged with driving while impaired in a Friday morning wreck that sent the man and a Wake County sheriff's deputy to the hospital.
Posted — UpdatedCarlos Alberto Moya, of 1800 Fountain Drive, is also charged with driving left of center, a seat belt violation and driver's license restriction violation.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Moya was driving a 2008 Kia Sedona van east on Poole Road near Knightdale at about 6:10 a.m. when he crossed the center line and struck Deputy Joseph Samuel Coley head-on.
Troopers said Coley, 45, saw the van cross the center line and tried to get the vehicle to stop by putting on his blue lights. Coley's cruiser was nearly stopped when it was hit.
Coley was treated at WakeMed and released.
Moya remained in WakeMed late Friday morning in stable condition. His injuries were not life-threatening, troopers said.
Moya had two previous DWI convictions in Wake County in 2008 and 2013.
