Ex-Wake jail officer pleads guilty to selling drugs to inmates

A former employee of the Wake County Detention Center was sentenced to prison Thursday for selling drugs to inmates.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A former employee of the Wake County Detention Center was sentenced to prison Thursday for selling drugs to inmates.

Andrew Richard Byrd, 25, of Apex, was arrested while at work on July 28. He pleaded guilty to providing controlled substances to inmates, possession of controlled substances in a jail or prison and conspiracy to sell or deliver heroin. He was sentenced to three consecutive prison sentences of six to 17 months each, followed by two years on probation.
