RALEIGH, N.C. — Jagger, a canine member of the Wake County Sheriff's Office, died Friday at the age of 10 of cancer.

Jagger was the canine partner of Deputy Brad Manville and worked for the department for four years.

"Jagger had a unique disposition for a police dog. He could be playful and gentle around children one minute, but ready to catch the criminals the very next minute," Sheriff Donnie Harrison said in a statement.

Manville credited Jagger with saving his life during a fatal struggle with a break-in suspect who had fled from authorities in 2009.

Manville called Jagger "an amazing animal, loyal partner, faithful companion and sweet-spirited dog."

The Belgian Malinois was trained in both patrol and narcotics. He was ranked the No. 1 K-9 in the U.S. Police Canine Association regional trials in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
