Wake authorities investigating jail suicide

Posted June 7, 2010

— The Wake County Sheriff's Office is investigating a suicide that happened at the county detention center over the weekend.

Sheriff Donnie Harrison said Monday that Steven Hope, 28, was found hanging from a bed sheet from an air vent around 5:55 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Hope had not been exhibiting any unusual behavior prior to his death, Harrison said, and there was no reason for him to have been on suicide watch.

He had been checked on twice in the previous hour and had finished eating dinner before being discovered on a routine check, Harrison said.

The Wake County District Attorney's Office will also review the case after the sheriff's office's investigation is complete.

Hope was arrested Friday on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in Vance County court on an underage drinking charge from 2002. He was also a fugitive from justice on a larceny charge out of Virginia.

Harrison also said Hope had been taken to WakeMed Saturday afternoon after passing out and cutting his head in his jail cell.

    Praying for his family.

Those of you that are sooo quick to judge detention centers and prisons should work ONE shift and I promise YOU WOULDN'T last!!! My husband is a Lt. for the prisons and they go through H**L!!! Not taking up for them either if someone was supposed to be keeping a close watch on him but everybody is so quick to place blame with the little info that was provided.

If someone wants to take their life, THEY WILL FIND A WAY TO DO IT!!!

The case would have been dismissed after all that time for such a minor charge.

Life doesn't treat everyone equally. Jail has a way of bringing that home to someone who may feel like they don't have much hope.

Judge not; you really don't know what he felt, or what he might have been if he had had the same advantages of someone more fortunate.

This young man has had a troubled life. I knew him personally and he was a sweet child growing up with my kids- we will never know what pushed him to do this- but underage drinking charge after 8 years - come on now- what was that all about? Larceny in VA- that was probably that old too! And he passed out- from what- we have a lot of unanswered questions!

Passed out? Maybe knocked out then ..... hmmmm

  • gunny462 Jun 7, 2010

Wow Dr61 let up. I mean if they're checking twice in an hour (plus at dinner), what do you want done? bed check every 15? 10?
Rewrite the law for this alone?

Also, the DA is looking into it, who does the SBI report to?
Jumping to conclusions, jumping to conclusions hmmm?

BTW, to self-inflict an injury while in jail to go to the hospital is a common incident.
