Each day, dozens of new animals show up at the Wake County Animal Shelter. With the facility undergoing renovations, space is at a premium, providing an extra challenge to staff and volunteers trying to make sure every animal has a place to call home.

"Every day is a concern because we don't know what can come in our door. We don't have a guess," said Dr. Jennifer Federico, the shelter director. "We could get five. We could get 60."

In the last week, the shelter has received 233 dogs and cats.

The construction project means rooms are closed down as crews work their way toward an update. And the shelter has had to reach out more often to other pet rescue organizations and foster homes to help with the overflow.

Some shelter workers have even taken dogs home with them temporarily.

Employee Cindy Lynch planned to take a puppy named Libby home with her Friday. "She is too little to be in the kennels here, so she's going to go home with me tonight," Lynch said.

Abbey Codling was among the visitors to the shelter Friday looking for pet to adopt. She fell in love with a puppy named Gretel.

"I love her. She's so cute," Codling said.

Codling needs her mother's permission before she can finalize the adoption.

Federico said the dogs and cats continue to come in, and she urged anyone interested in adopting to pay a visit and find a furry friend.
