Vivian Howard, Death and Taxes named James Beard finalists

— A local chef and restaurant have been named finalists for James Beard Foundation awards.

The awards are often referred to as "The Oscars of Food," and the Triangle has a legacy of taking home honors.

Vivian Howard, owner of Chef and the Farmer in Kinston, is a finalist for outstanding host for her PBS series "A Chef's Life." She is competing against Andrew Zimmern of Travel Channel's "Bizarre Foods" and Pati Jinich of WETA's "Pati's Mexican Table." The PBS series was also named a finalist for best TV program shot on location.

James Beard award winning chef Ashley Christensen's Death and Taxes was named a finalist for best new restaurant in the country.

The winners will be announced during a gala at Lyric Opera of Chicago in New York City on May 2.
