WILSON, N.C. — A Virginia man surrendered to a Wilson police officer Saturday after confessing to killing his wife, police said Monday.

Johnny Ray Hubbard, 44, of 1401 Deep Creek Blvd. in Chesapeake, Va., approached the officer in a convenience store parking lot and asked for help. He told the officer he had killed his estranged wife, Beverly Gail Hubbard, in Portsmouth, Va., police said.

Police took Hubbard into custody until they could confirm his story, and they are now working with Virginia authorities to extradite him to Portsmouth to face criminal charges. He was being held without bond Monday in the Wilson County Jail.
