RALEIGH, N.C. — Deputies were bringing a local man back to Wake County from Virginia on Friday afternoon to face a murder charge in his wife's death this week, authorities said.

Sonny Howard, 42, of 14925 Creedmoor Road, was arrested in Galax, Va., on Wednesday afternoon with his wife's body in the back of his pickup truck. He was held there under a fugitive warrant until he could be extradited to North Carolina.

Investigators have not determined where Sherry Howard, 50, died, and they haven't released any information on how she was killed.

Sonny Howard's arrest came hours after a neighbor reported seeing a body outside the Howard home north of Falls Lake. Wake County deputies couldn't find a body when they searched the area, however.

Investigators tracked him to Galax by following the signal on his cellphone, authorities said.
