Vigil for teen's death helps raise gun violence awareness
Dozens gathered for a candlelight vigil Wednesday night to remember an 18-year-old shot and killed in a May 2 accidental shooting.
Posted — Updated“I want you to remember that Kiki was bubbly, full of life all the time, the life of the party,” said her mother, Tikita McKoy. “She will be greatly missed by everyone.”
Lockamy and her boyfriend, Derick Williams, were playing with a gun at his Mitchner Drive home in Wilsons Mills on May 2 when it went off.
Lockamy, 18, was shot in the chest. She died at the scene.
Williams, 42, is charged with second-degree murder. He remained in the Johnston County jail on Wednesday.
Dozens attended a candlelight vigil at Mount Vernon Christian Church in Clayton Tuesday night to raise awareness regarding gun violence involving women.
“We’ve got to stop the jokes because our young boys and young brothers will follow us,” said church pastor T.K. Leathers.
McKoy is leaning on her faith to get through the loss of her daughter.
“Not all times are good, but with the help of the church, Dr. Leathers, the community, it’s been an inspiration,” she said.
Funeral services for Lockamy will be held at Princeton Church of God in Princeton on Sunday at 2 p.m.
