CARTHAGE, N.C. — A video that has been getting a lot of attention on social media shows an employee slumped over at the waist in a chair at the Tara Plantation in Carthage. This story is tough to tell because laws to protect the rights of patients won’t allow investigators to say much about the incident.

But the video is disturbing. It was taken about 5:30 in the morning during an overnight shift.

The video was taken on Monday, Feb. 12 by employee Stephanie Alston, who shot the three-minute video. Alston says the staff member in the video was responsible for passing out medication to patients in the Alzheimer's unit.

It is unclear why the person in the video is slumped over.

The video has prompted investigations by the Moore County Department of Social Services, Carthage Police and the state Division of Health and Human Resources.

Alston alleges it demonstrated a lack of care for patients. She shared the video with a member of the Department of Social Services who happened to be at the facility the next day. And then the following day, she was called into the office and fired.

Tara Plantation management would not go on camera, but the owner of the facility told WRAL News they may never know why that employee was slumped over. No one rendered any aid or notified a supervisor or called 911, according to Kathy Huffman. The employee has not returned to work.

In a statement Huffman said, "“Immediate action should have been taken, and it is unfortunate that Ms. Alston’s action was to simply video someone who was in distress as opposed to rendering aid to her fellow employee.”

The owner of Tara Plantation says she welcomes whatever inspections or investigations are deemed necessary. She says the facility strives to provide the best care possible.
