Victim in N. Portland house explosion dies, second victim found dead at scene

Posted July 25

— The victim who was injured in a house explosion in North Portland Monday died from his injuries, according to firefighters. A second victim was also found dead at the site of the explosion.

Portland Fire and Rescue crews responded to the 6400 block of North Kerby Avenue just before 3 p.m. When they arrived, one home was already destroyed and a second home was on fire.

One person was found at the scene with life-threatening injuries. He has been identified as 42-year-old Matthew McCrann. Crews said McCrann was either outside at the time of the explosion or thrown from the house. McCrann later died at the hospital.

A team from Northwest Natural responded to the incident and stopped gas flow from the home that had exploded.

Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from destroying the second house. Rapid fire movement, a damaged natural gas line, hot weather, downed power lines and multiple affected houses hindered the firefighters' efforts

The second victim has yet to be identified. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
