Vermont businesses face fines under recycling ordinance

WILLISTON, Vt. — The Chittenden Solid Waste District has considered fines against three Vermont businesses it says have violated a recycling ordinance by mixing recyclable materials with landfill trash.
The Burlington Free Press (http://bfpne.ws/2cy3cNS ) reports that district documents say staff checked a Milton business and found that recyclable materials were being thrown away.
The district's Board of Commissioners voted last month to impose a fine of $500 plus a $100 penalty for each day of an ongoing violation. Officials say the fines began Sept. 9.
The newspaper reports a South Burlington business avoided a fine by convincing the district they'd begun following the law. Another Milton business is facing a fine but is expected to argue its case at an upcoming hearing.
The district has banned recyclables from landfills since 1993.
