Vehicle in fatal Cary wreck still at large

Posted July 21, 2009

— A month after a fatal wreck, Cary police are still looking for a second vehicle they think may have played a role.

Kailee Nicole Birdsong, 16, was killed June 22 and her stepmother and brother were injured at the intersection of Green Level to Durham Road and Cary Glen Boulevard.

Police have said that evidence at the scene indicated Melissa Birdsong swerved to avoid hitting something. Police want to talk to the driver of a second car they think may have been there at the time. They described the second vehicle as a beige van or large SUV with a box-shaped rear. The vehicle likely has black paint or a scrape on the front, left bumper, police said.

Anyone with information about the wreck is asked to call the Cary Police Department at 919-469-4012.

Why is everyone making a big deal about this story!!!???? The kid died as she was not in a seat belt. The street may or may not be full of bad traffic but people have forgotten that buckle up for safety means just that!

Let's see if I have this right.. The 16 y/o had a 28 y/o step mother? Was somebody having a mid life crisis or what.

As far as the driver, he / she / it needs to be charged with felony hit and run, and what ever the charge would have been for a non fatal crash under the same circumstances, but no death by vehicle. Her and her stepmother's irresponsibility shouldn't compound someone else's mistake.

sayitoutloud - that picture is of the 28 yr old step mom of the girl who died, and her son, the girls step brother.

It has a picture of the mother and her 3 year old son, not Kaylee and the son...it's her brother.

Maybe both don't exits? (At large car or driver)

I don't think the 16 year old had a three year old. It looks like that is the step mother and step brother in the picture if you read the names.

Click on the pictures, one of them says her name and her 3 year old son.

The vehicle isn't at large; the driver of the vehicle is at large.

Where in the story does it say she had a 3 year old. Her Stepmother and brother were also injured. Not following your comment at all.

I know this is not part of the story, but she was 16 and had a 3 year old. WOW! That blows my mind.
