Van crashes into Smithfield house, killing one

Posted April 28, 2011

— A Four Oaks man died when his van crashed into a house in Johnston County at about 95 mph Wednesday afternoon, state troopers said.

Danny Travis Holmes, 34, was going south on Packing Plant Road around 4 p.m. when he ran off the right side of the road, troopers said. He pulled the van back on the road but crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road. The van hit a mailbox, ditch and then a house at 2801 Packing Plant Road.

Holmes, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the van, troopers said. He died at the scene.

A 12-year-old boy was inside the home when the van hit it, but he was uninjured. Troopers said the family cannot live in the house because of the damage from the wreck.

Troopers said they are still investigating what caused Holmes to run off the road. They are waiting on the results of toxicology tests.

The speed limit along Packing Plant Road is 55 mph.

Why would it matter if he was wearing a seat belt. He was running 95mph! Obviously no respect for anyone else!!!!!!!

"And that, class, is called enertia. So, what do we do to prevent ourselves from becoming a human missile? That's right...wear our safety belts. Good job. Now, it's recess time."

Yes, even a child driving a Big Wheel understands physics. But for some reason, some just forget this later in life and pay the ultimate price.

Another case of a stupid driver not wearing a seat belt. Even close to home, seat belts save lives!!!!
