RALEIGH, N.C. — A Virginia sheriff’s deputy died and his wife was in the hospital after a wreck on Interstate 40 west near the I-440 split in Wake County Thursday night.

Andrew Lewis Gabriel, 40, died after his sport-utility vehicle veered off the road to the right, went into the woods and hit a tree, troopers said.

Emergency crews took his wife, Bielka Maria Gabriel, to WakeMed with serious injuries. She was in good condition Friday morning, according to authorities.

Troopers said they don’t suspect alcohol in the crash. However, authorities said they’re not sure what caused the SUV to go off the road.

Andrew Gabriel was a reserve sheriff’s deputy from Fairfax County in Virginia. He usually worked in Virginia during the week and came home to Raleigh on the weekends, troopers said.
