Utilities Commission to hold hearing on possible Aqua NC rate hike

Posted — UpdatedRALEIGH, N.C. — Customers of Aqua NC, the state's largest private water utility, will have a chance on Thursday evening to raise concerns about the company's push to raise rates by almost 20 percent.
In paperwork filed with the North Carolina Utilities Commission, the company says it needs the rate hike to help pay for millions of dollars in system upgrades.
Aqua NC took advantage of a new state law that allows utilities to request a rate adjustment before hearing from their customers.
The Utilities Commission, which will ultimately approve any rate increase, will hold a public hearing Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Dobbs Building on North Salisbury Street.
According to its website, Aqua NC serves more than 70,000 customers in 53 of the state's 100 counties. In the Triangle, Aqua NC serves customers in Chatham, Cumberland, Durham, Granville, Hoke, Johnston, Moore, Nash, Orange, Person, Vance and Wake counties.
