Utah school board considers waiving attendance requirements

Posted 1:32 p.m. Friday

— One State School Board member is asking to waive the state's school attendance rule in light of recent severe winter storms that have forced school closures.

The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/2jM4A7A ) that school districts are required to conduct school a minimum of 180 days and 990 hours a year but board member Terryl Warner says that because of recent weather, the Utah State Board of Education should consider waiving the day requirement. Schools would still be required to meet the 990-hour minimum.

Warner says she will ask the state board on Friday to consider the one-time waivers. The District 1 board member represents schools in hard-hit Elder, Cache, and Morgan counties as well as parts of Weber and Summit counties.
