US agriculture department: 103 geese rounded up, euthanized

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Federal wildlife officials say more than 100 geese have been euthanized after a roundup in a Virginia city.
The Virginian-Pilot reports last weekend's roundup followed Virginia Beach waterfront residents' petition of the U.S. Department of Agriculture to remove the geese after nonlethal methods like "no feeding" signs failed to shrink the population. U.S. Rep. Scott Taylor said in a statement on Wednesday that both constituents and City of Virginia Beach officials have expressed concern over the lack of transparency and communication surrounding the incident.
The UDSA rounded up 103 geese from the Kings Grant neighborhood and processed them into food for animals at wildlife rehabilitation centers. USDA Wildlife Services assistant state director Jennifer Cromwell says the process is a last resort for areas dealing with overwhelming numbers of geese.
