DURHAM, N.C. — All lanes of U.S. Highway 15/501 were closed Friday morning due to a crash that killed one person and injured two others, police said.

Vernon Smith Sr., 67, of Graham, was exiting the Durham Freeway onto southbound U.S. 15/501 at about 6:45 a.m. when he lost control of his Ford F-150 pickup, police said. The truck struck a Chevrolet TrailBlazer, driven by Cassandra Moseley, 32, of Norlina, which was in the right southbound lane, police said.

Frances Moseley, 67, a passenger in the TrailBlazer, died.

A Mercedes Benz driven by Angela Carlton-Campbell, 54, of Durham, was southbound on U.S. 15/501 when it was struck by a wheelchair that was thrown from the pickup after the crash, police said.

Moseley was taken to Duke University Hospital and was listed in stable condition with serious injuries. Smith and Carlton-Campbell also were taken to Duke Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Smith was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and careless and reckless driving, police said.

U.S. 15/501 remained closed around 9 a.m. between Morreene Road and the Durham Freeway, but northbound lanes reopened around 11 a.m.
