It just looks like a pretty standard construction right now, but crews continue to work to build Wake Forest's first sprayground.

The sprayground at Taylor Street Park, 416 N. Taylor St., is still on track for a late July opening. Work began in April. No official grand opening date has been set yet, said Bill Crabtree, Wake Forest's communications and public affairs director.

The zero-depth aquatic play area will feature dozens of devices that spray, mist or dump water. Admission to the sprayground will be free once it opens.

Wake Forest's website offers a little bit more detail about just what those features will look like. They include 16 jet streams; one arch; one tot mister; one Ombrello Twirl, which offers a cascading water effect; one bucket trio to dump water on sprayground visitors; five directional water jets; one aqua dome and more.

As I wrote last month, spraygrounds have become increasingly popular with local parks departments as a way to offer people opportunities to cool off without the costs of lifeguards and other staff required for a traditional pool. In the last couple of years, Fuquay-Varina and Cary have opened their first spraygrounds. Raleigh and Durham also have spraygrounds.

Our public pools database lists the locations of all of them in the region. I also chat about some of them in this week's Out and About TV program, which airs at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, on WRAL-TV.
After Wake Forest opens its sprayground, it will quickly get to work on its next big aquatics project: a new swimming pool, which is slated to open next spring.
