RALEIGH, N.C. — An underground transformer caught fire in downtown Raleigh early Thursday morning.

Duke Energy crews were investigating the cause of the fire, which was contained around 1:30 a.m.

The fire happened near West Davie Street and McDowell Street.

The fire led to reports of explosions, but first responders said the noise was the manhole cover being repeatedly pushed from the ground.
