UNC students ask for more support for sex assault victims

Organizers of the demonstration said it was not in direct response to recent rape allegations against a UNC football player, but many people who spoke demanded justice for his accuser, Delaney Robinson.

Robinson, a 19-year old UNC sophomore, says she was raped at an on-campus apartment during a Valentine's Day party by junior linebacker Allen Artis.

"We have been failed by our university," Justine Orlovsky-Schnitzler said.

"I am completely blown away by the lack of support for this girl," said Jillian Murray.

Murray, who says she was sexually assaulted when she was a UNC student in 2013 and is currently suing the school said Robinson's claims brought her a bit of deja vu.

"At this point, you think something would have changed, but it hasn't," she said.

While some called for action, others cautioned patience. While authorities have not charged Artis with a crime, they say their investigation Is ongoing.

UNC Chancellor Carol Folt defended the time it has taken.

"In every situation, we must be fair to all of the individuals involved and not rush to judgment, regardless of how that approach and the time it takes might be viewed in the court of public opinion," she said in a statement.

Artis' attorney agrees.

"People are harmed all the time by others taking a position on a story they know nothing about. My client has been painted as a marauding rapist with no opportunity to counter that assertion. That is unfair, unkind and untrue," lawyer Kerry Sutton said.
